Beyond Europe, entering Asia | Shanghai 2014

Vladimir Djurovic and his young team at Labbrand, China, took on the challenge of organizing a Semiofest in Shanghai. Applied semiotics is a nascent discipline in China and we needed to create a good blend of the global and local to pull off a successful event.

We got good participation from local academic semioticians and practitioners who study the changing Chinese culture. China is a semiotically rich culture and the content presented explored dimensions of the culture. A highlight of the Shanghai event was the collaboration with a leading design firm with a keynote delivered by the founder of Wang Design. We offered training in Introductory Structural Semiotics, the French way, led by Anne Flore Maman. The Labbrand team introduced some fun ideas for the participants such as creating your own seal and a photobooth to be clicked with your favorite sign in Chinese.
