The Tallinn event was masterminded by Kaie Kotov and her team. Estonia is a leading European center for Semiotics with a significant academic heritage anchored at the University of Tartu. The event benefited from an extensive collaboration with the Tartu Department of Semiotics as well as funding from various local cultural institutions. The Department had significant presence throughout the event with a keen interest to learn the state of the art at an applied level. The event organization was very pioneering and led to a very diverse and interesting programme including an up-front training on conducting expert analysis as well as a primer in Soviet cultural semiotics. The presentations were well curated into clusters (innovation was the main theme of the conference). We had presentations on everything from the redesign of wheelchairs, to avatar therapy, semiotics and ethnography and excellent keynotes from both Farouk Seif and Malcolm Evans who gave an exciting vision of the future of semiotics. The venue, a huge ex power station was a fascinating place to explore and the event was catered by Slap Slop who provided delicious and hearty vegan food. We also had a Semiofest 5th birthday party which involved a salsa class and a birthday cake. The event itself was extremely well attended.
