Semiofest Mexico City 2022

Post Covid – Mexico put the fest back into Semiofest

With a packed social program and a distinctly flamboyant Mexican flavour, we celebrated 4 days of semiotics brands and culture in a truly world city with great food in the festivity of the Day of the Dead. A workshop on visual notetaking, 2 keynotes (cultural history & cognitive semiotics), 22 punchy presentations on the theme of re-semiotization, and a client workshop with 2 indigenous Mexican brands near Frida Kahlo’s house rounded out the program. Mariachis & piñatas were also both to the fore!

Some highlights from Semiofest Mexico 2022

A short film with some testimonials and a flavour of the atmosphere at the Mexico.

The organisation of Semiofest, Mexico, was a labour of love. It took place in October 2022. It was initially scheduled for May 2020, but it was worth waiting for when it finally arrived. Akville, Max, Stephanie and Ian’s team from semiosfera worked super hard and showed remarkable resilience to keep committed over a 2-year hiatus. They worked hard to put together the crucial ingredients for a great Semiofest.

We had as venues 2 historic venues in Mexico City: an ex-Monastery, the Centro Cultural Contemporanea and first printing press in Latin America, Casa De La Primera Imprenta. We also had two excellent keynotes from Jose Manuel Valenzuela and Roman Esqueda, which set the scene for each day. Bookending the time we were there was a visual notetaking session and then a turbo-charged workshop using semiotics to help an indigenous Pixza brand and an environmental charity.

Our time there coincided with the Day of the Dead festivities, which meant the city was decorated with colourful skeletons. Every presenter was given a sugared skull as a farewell gift! Mexico Semiofest wad particularly memorable for many reasons, but mainly for the way it incorporated both learning and fun with boisterous Mexican humour.
