Semiotics, software and media visualization

What happens when we analyze visual media with tools from the scientific domain? We propose a twofold perspective to discuss this question: 1) Lev Manovich calls this practice media visualization; 2) Jacques Fontanille says that scientific imagery allows to access the invisible. What is the invisible in visual media? It seems we can identify at least two elements: on the one hand, visual features and, on the other hand, spatial and temporal patterns. So, if we apply scientific software operations on visual media (photographs, film, comics, etc.), we generate a brand new image that needs some interpretation guides. Both Manovich and Fontanille have already distinguished some strategies: adjustment of view distance; rhetoric figures; visual configuration; and, narrative of transformations. We believe it is necessary to add one more: software operations.
